Back to School Update #1:

August 25th, 2020

Greetings, Laker Families,

We hope this letter finds you continuing to enjoy what is left of your summer.  For those of you who love sunshine, it has certainly been stellar! As you may have guessed, the Laker Staff are already hard at work, preparing to ensure that our students and families are equipped to return to school feeling safe, happy, and ready to learn.  We have an incredible team who are collectively embracing new challenges and changes, one step at a time; together, we are committed to making the best of this very unique situation.

As your admin team, we are reaching out to you to provide you with a bit of helpful information that we hope will help you as we proceed into September. We can not begin to express our gratitude for the patience and understanding that has been demonstrated so far, as we continue to work towards a successful return.

Return to School Plan

TLDSB’s Return to School Plan for Parents has been released.  This can be found on the board website at https://www.tldsb.ca/ .  The information in this document is VERY important.  We encourage all families to review the content carefully.

Class Placements

Thank you to all of our families who took time to fill in the pre-registration survey.  Our families are awesome: we had overwhelming participation and cooperation in collecting this information.  We are still finalizing our numbers for classes and anticipate class lists to be finalized by the end of this week, beginning of next.  We will use school messenger to reach out and share placements as soon as numbers are finalized. Please check your email regularly and watch for messages.

Return of Borrowed Technology

We have had many questions  about when/if students should return technology that was borrowed during at home learning.  The process for this is as follows:

  1.  All students in Ms. Gallagher, Mr. Krueger, Ms. Collins/Wesselink, and Ms. Ganz’s classes had Edwin technology which will continue to be used next year.  These students should bring their Edwins with them on the first day of school.  They will be wiping, cleansing and teachers will take stock of who lost equipment, any tech troubles, etc. and proceeding accordingly.
  2. Students in Kindergarten to Grade 6 who borrowed Chromebooks or Ipads to learn at home should bring them to school in their backpacks, on the first day of school.  Machines will be sanitized and students will ideally use the same device in their classrooms during the school year.

Staggered Entry

Our start dates for the upcoming year will be staggered.  Parents will receive an email, informing them of their child’s start date.  Efforts will be made to ensure that students from the same families are scheduled to attend on the same day.  The process is as follows (see page 3 of TLDSB Return to School document)

September 8-11th-each student will attend one, full  day of school.

September 14-18th-each student will attend two, full days of school.

For at home, online,  learning, all K-8 students will attend their first, full day on September 18th.

Admin Team Google Meets for Parents

We know that many questions are arising as a result of the upcoming return to school.  For those who want the chance to speak to us, we are offering scheduled,  Google Meets.  If you are interested in meeting with us in a Live Chat, please fill in the form below,  and we will send a link for you to attend a Google Meet with us.  These will be informational in nature-we will be sharing details of our return to school and taking questions from families.

Welcome to Kindergarten Update

We are currently unable to host visitors or volunteers in our building.  As such, the traditional approach to Welcome to Kindergarten is not possible.  Students will receive their Welcome to Kindergarten packages on their first day of school (see staggered entry).  Our Kindergarten teams will be reaching out to families on an individual basis to inform them of the details regarding how best to prepare students as soon as class lists are finalized.

We hope that this has helped answer some of your questions regarding return to school.   We are excited to start the year and are committed to keeping your informed as we move forward.
