Some Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) schools use propane as a heating source, and thus, stores it on-site in several propane tanks, supplied by Sparlings Propane of Parkland Corporation.
All equipment is maintained according to the standards set out in provincial and federal regulations. The propane storage area is clear of vegetation and snow, and accessible by propane trucks for deliveries. The propane storage area is maintained according to the latest version of CSA B149.2 Propane Storage and Handling Code.
The quantity of propane stored on-site is regulated by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).

Propane (UN 1075) is a gas under normal atmospheric conditions, however, increasing the pressure causes the substance to condense into a liquid. This characteristic of propane allows for storage of large quantities of liquid propane inside of a pressurized container. When liquid propane vaporizes from its liquid state into its gaseous state, it creates a refrigerating effect (cooling).
Propane is used in industry as a fuel source, refrigerant, solvent, and as a chemical feedstock. The product that is stored and distributed to the school is odorized with Ethyl Mercaptan making the product smell like rotten eggs or boiling cabbage to aid in detection.

2. Call 911

Due to the ongoing aftermath of the ice storm this past weekend, many areas within Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) have declared state of emergencies and are still experiencing power and internet/network outages, downed trees and powerlines, gas shortages, and hazardous road conditions.
While some areas of the Board are less impacted, many students and staff live or work in severely affected communities. As a result, and to ensure the safety of all, TLDSB has made the decision to keep all schools (including the Virtual Learning Centre) and child care centres within schools closed to students and the public tomorrow, Tuesday, April 1.
Please note, schools will not be moving to online learning.
Given that many families in our Board remain without power and may not be able to access email or phone reliably, we ask families and staff to assist in spreading this communication broadly.
