Dear Families,
As we embrace the end of November, we want to take a moment to reflect on all the wonderful things happening at our school. This month is a great time to give thanks for our community, the learning we share, and the growth we see in our students.
Upcoming Events:
- Parent Council Nov 26th 6-7pm
- Holiday Shopping Spree Dec 5 (currently taking Donations)
- Globus Theatre Dec 10-12 Aladdin (info to come from classrooms)
- Senior Girls Volleyball @Langton 3:40pm
- K-2 Holiday Concert and Festive Night Dec 16th (more info to come)
- Holiday Turkey Dinner Dec 18th
- Board Designated Holiday Dec 20th
- Curling Club starting in January
Learning Highlights:
- Curriculum Focus: In November, our grade 4-8 educators have been diving in on high yield strategies in reading and writing. You may hear your students come home talking specifically about vocabulary they are learning, cursive writing, and/or some fluency building work (e.g., partner reading).
- Curriculum Focus: Our Grade 1 classes have been doing some strategic planning together to provide students with another opportunity throughout the day to practice their word reading and language comprehension.
- A whole school focus will be working on fact fluency, we are helping our students become more confident in working with addition/subtraction and multiplication/division facts.
- Our kindergarten team had their first at the desk learning opportunity. The students participated with classes all over TLDSB in a phonological awareness lesson. Their next virtual learning session is next week and will bring TLDSB classes together again for explicit instruction in phonics.
- Our Grade 5 and 6 educators are learning about explicit instruction in Math Fundamentals and have participated in one system professional development session. These classes will meet virtually with other classes across our system this week for a Learn @the desk session with more learning sessions to follow.
Community Engagement:
We appreciate your continued support and involvement in our school community. If you would like to volunteer, please reach out. We are looking for volunteers related to reading with students and practicing math facts. Please email [email protected] if this interests you!
Special shoutout to Sandra Clements who donated 100 tickets to the Peterborough Petes hockey game. I know our students and families greatly appreciate this opportunity!
Staffing Changes:
Please help me celebrate Mrs. Dodds who will be retiring as of November 30th. We are so excited for her and wish her all the best. Ms. Jelovac will be continuing on in the classroom, we feel very fortunate that we were able to keep her in our building.
Reminders:
- As the weather gets cooler, please ensure your child comes to school dressed appropriately. Layered clothing is recommended for those chilly mornings!
- Please label your child’s clothing. We have many sweaters, coats, water bottles, hats that come to the lost and found. If they have a name on them we can get them back to the student quicker.
- Reminder that the pick up lane is meant to be used as a “Kiss and Fly”. Please do not park and leave your vehicle. Our staff on morning duty will ensure all students cross safely at our crosswalk.
- The morning bell rings at 9:15, please make sure your child(ren) is on time. In most classes, language instruction is during our first block of the day. Therefore it is critical that students are in their classes ready to learn at 9:20.
Thank you for being an integral part of our school community. Wishing you all a wonderful end of November and December filled with joy and gratitude.
Warm regards,
Sarah Korkush
